It was all over rather quickly.
Hands stuffed in her pockets, Cassandra had been walking in her usual slouched fashion, heading in no particular direction but mainly exploring this new city. Eyes taking in land marks, certain buildings since road signs held no significance. Pausing at a street corner, she rested up against the street light and took stock of the weather - it was a sunny day, obscured by milky clouds. Felt decent.
Abruptly, a sleek black cat decided to tangle between her legs and she glanced down in surprise. Two green eyes peered up at her and a musical meow followed. A rare semi-smile flitted across the young woman's face and she clucked softly at the pretty cat. Suddenly a car backfired, causing both woman and cat to jump, Cassandra into a defensive crouch and the cat fled into the street. Quickly realizing it wasn't a gun shot, she took off after the cat out of concern and managed to scoop her up out of a car's way.
Claws dug into her shoulder and arm, but she did not flinch. Hurrying into an alley away from the busy street, Cassandra hummed under her breath, petting the silky coat (well taken care of) until the cat settled into her arms. She wasn't used to comforting another living being, but it felt nice to be appreciated - the female cat purred a little and she smiled again, her face muscles unused to the feeling.
Feeling the tag on her collar, Cassandra held it close to her face and scrutinized the unfamiliar writing, frustration bubbling under her usual calm demeanor. Holding the cat up, she looked into the innocent eyes and the cat pawed her face gently.
"Hello." she tested, her voice rough and stretching the syllables out clumsily. "Cat." The cat mewed softly back. Tucking her into her arms again, Cassandra shyly sought out someone to read out the address. A shop keeper sufficed, and her razor sharp memory committed the directions to memory. (the old man was patient, at her confusion, detailing the landmarks over names.)
A short time later, the young woman stood outside the door, hugging "Isis" close though now the cat was wriggling at being home. She mewed loudly, and Cassandra hesitantly knocked on the door before setting down Isis and taking a step back, turning to leave....
